Literature, databases and archives

Umeå University Library provides access to the material you need for your research. The library collects the latest scientific literature along with large amounts of historical source material. Your UMU ID gives you access to digital articles and databases wherever you are and your UMU card functions as a library card.

The very latest and the very old

Regardless of your discipline, you have access to scientific material through Umeå University Library. The library has a wide range of subjects and types of materials, with everything from databases and new literature to older source material for research. Use the library’s search tool to find digital articles, printed books and much more.

Access articles and databases with your UMU ID

Your UMU ID gives you access to the library’s electronic resources, such as e-books, articles and databases (such as Pubmed, Scopus and Juno). Since you can access all electronic resources by logging in and searching in the library’s search tool, this is a good starting point. If you are connected to the University’s network on campus or via VPN, you can also access most databases and other resources directly through each platform.

Source material for your research

The library has everything from manuscripts and annual reports to children’s literature and tourist brochures, early printed books and the latest publications. In the selection, special consideration is given to whether the material has a connection to northern Sweden. The library’s broad range of source material can be a great asset, especially for those doing research in the humanities and social sciences.

Material older than 1850 can be more challenging to find because it is not always searchable in the library’s search tool. Manuscripts and other fragile materials are also not available in open stacks. Contact the library if you would like an introduction into how to search for and access older material and material in special collections.

Order what you need

If the material you need for your research is not available at the library, you can order it. Copies of articles are provided in digital format and are usually delivered within a few hours. When it comes to books, the library will normally purchase these upon request. If not, you will receive them as an interlibrary loan from another library.

If you are using older material for your research, you can request digitisation of the library’s books free of charge thanks to the eBooks on Demand[a1]  (EOD) service. A digital copy of the book will be provided in PDF format (applies to books printed through 1930).
