Anna Karin Hurtig

I am a Medical Doctor with a MSc degree in "Infections and health in the tropics" and a DrPH degree from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

I work currently as Professor in Public Health at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University, Sweden. I am the head of the Department. During the years I have been engaged in education at different levels and I like very much to work with PhD and MPH students. I am interested in health policy and systems research. My focus is on the strengthening of local health systems and primary health care. My experience is mainly in low and middle income countries but increasingly also in Northern Sweden. Although contexts are different there are often common issues such as fragmented management and delivery systems. A list of my publications and projects can be found here.

Isabel Goicolea

I am a Medical Doctor with a MSc degree in "Sexual and Reproductive Health Research" from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from Umeå University. I worked in public health and sexual and reproductive rights for ten years in the Amazon basin of Ecuador and that experience has shaped my research career.

I currently work as Associate Professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University. I teach in different MPH and PhD courses and supervise medical, MPH and PhD students. Supporting and mentoring students at different levels of their research studies is one of the things that I enjoy most of my job.

My research focuses on health systems and sexual and reproductive health. I spent two years in Spain doing research on primary health care teams responses to women exposed to intimate partner violence, and after I moved back to Umeå in 2014 I have been engaged in research on youth in northern Sweden. I am leading a research project assessing how youth friendly are youth clinics in northern Sweden and another one looking for strategies to improve access to health care for rural youths. I am interested in sexual and reproductive health, and gender based violence, especially in regards to how health systems address those complex issues. Methodologically I am interested in qualitative and mixed methods, especially on to how best to approach the complexity of health systems´ interventions. My publications and projects can be found here.

Miguel San Sebastián

I am a Medical Doctor with a MSc degree in control of infectious diseases and a PhD degree in environmental epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I learnt and practice public health during 12 years among indigenous communities of the Amazon basin of Ecuador.

I work currently as an Professor in public health at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, where I teach different in courses (public health, epidemiology, social epidemiology and health systems) at Master and PhD level. In addition to socioeconomic inequalities in health, I am personally very interested on how to combine Goethe´s approach to research, Gandhi´s values and systems thinking to the improvement of health systems performance in isolated areas of the world. A list of my publications and projects can be found here.

Per E Gustafsson

I am born and raised in a Northern Sweden village (Nyland, Kramfors kommun); subsequently a med school dropout turned PhD in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry turned researcher and teacher in public health and social epidemiology.

My research interests have mostly fallen within social epidemiology of some sort, and have oscillated between life course epidemiology, gender perspectives, embodiment, stress, neighborhoods & health, and the last years are marked by an increased attention to various forms of social inequalities in health – explanations, developments and life course perspectives. My publications can be found here. I teach at the MPH program and on PhD courses, mostly on the topics of methods and theory such as epidemiology, statistics, philosophy of science and public health theories.

More generally I'm interested philosophical and social aspects of science, critical perspectives, the interface between theory and methods, and I would say argumentation, discussions, and thinking in general. I have a soft spot for numbers, which has fluctuated between passion and moderate interest during my life, but has always been there in some form. I have a quite friendly disposition but prefer small than big groups, and also like to be on my own.

Paola Mosquera

I am a Psychologist with Specialization in Epidemiology, a Msc degree in Social Policy and a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health. The topic of health inequalities have been the common denominator for my educational and professional career.

While living in Colombia (my home country) I worked on the evaluation of the implementation of a large-scale Primary Health Care strategy in Bogotá and its contributions to reduce health inequalities. I was also involved in the development of clinical practice guidelines incorporating equity issues for the Colombian health system. When I moved to Sweden in 2014, I was granted a Marie Curie Postdoc and during that period, I was exploring how to apply a life course approach to analyze socio economic inequalities in cardiovascular health in Sweden.

I am currently working as a Researcher at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University. I teach epidemiology and social epidemiology at MPH and PhD courses and supervise students on their research studies. My research focuses on the evaluation of public health policies, the measurement and explanation of health inequalities and the application of an equity lens to public health interventions. I'm currently leading a research project evaluating the effects of the primary care choice reform on population health and socioeconomic inequalities in health in Sweden. I am generally interested in applying and learning advanced analytical methods to measure and understand the pathways through which health care intervention and policy could lead to successful outcomes and reduced inequalities. My publications and projects can be seen here.

Anni-Maria Pulkki-Brännström

I am a health economist with an MSc in Economics and a PhD from the University of Warwick (UK) on the diffusion of new technology. After my PhD I changed focus and faculty from social science to medicine. Since 2010 I have worked on global health economics first at UCL (UK) and then since 2013 at Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University.

My research focuses on the evaluation of public health interventions in particular through the use of cluster randomised controlled trials in health promotion and child health. As a health economist I am particularly interested in the relations between cost effectiveness (health maximisation) and health equity as twin objectives in public health policy. How can research methods accommodate this fact, and how do the two relate to each other on a theoretical level?

Currently I work on the economic evaluation of two health promotion interventions developed and long-running in Västerbotten: the Salut programme, a universal health promotion programme for parents and children in Västerbotten (a collaboration with Uppsala university) and Tobaksfri Duo, a tobacco prevention programme for adolescents in schools (a collaboration with Karolinska Institute). My publications and projects can be found here.

Masoud Vaezghasemi

My qualifications are BSc Food Science & Industry, MSc Public Health, MSc Food & Nutrition, and PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health. As part of my doctoral studies (2012-17), I studied the Nutrition Transition and the Double Burden of Malnutrition in Indonesia.

I have had several years of work experience in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research projects in Sweden (Salut Child-Health Intervention Program, 2009-10 and 2017-18; ETICS-Diet: Exploring the Iceberg of Celiacs, 2010-12: Poor Health and School Achievement 2017-18) and South-East Asia (EPI4 Project 2011-12: Evidence to Policy Implementation). Since 2015 I have began collaborations with the Department of Social and Behavioral Science, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; SAPHIR, the Scientific Association for Public Health in Iran; and the Global Burden of Disease at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington.

I am currently working as a postdoc in the Departments of Epidemiology and Global Health and of Social Work. My research interests lie within the social and contextual determinants of health and health inequalities, gender and social capital, child and adolescents' health and educational achievement.

Most importantly, my passion for academia has taught me many more than just building a career. I extremely enjoy teaching and interacting with students, collaborating and developing relations with researchers, and constantly challenging and improving my knowledge! My publications and projects can be found here.

Frida Jonsson

My background falls almost exclusively within the area of public health, spanning across sub-fields such as health-related project management and evaluation (BSc), epidemiology and global health (MSc) and social epidemiology (PhD). I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher within two projects concerning health systems access and strengthening in northern Sweden. The first one focusing on ‘landscapes of care’ for rural youth and the other one on e-health innovations as a strategy for improved access to person-centred care and strengthened community-based health systems.

My research interest centres largely on different forms of social inequalities in and determinants of health and health care. This builds on wish to understand and explain how various life circumstances and living conditions, such as e.g. socio-economy, rurality and remoteness, can shape the health and health care access of various populations. I am also very intrigued by the complexity of public health and health systems’ innovations and interventions, hoping to get to work more on these issues in the future.

Methodologically I am interested in and use both qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. I do some teaching in courses at the master program, mostly on topics related to social theories in public health. I also supervise both MPH and medical students. My publications and projects can be found here.
