Umeå Cognitive Science Seminar bjuder in till ett seminarium med Bert Jonsson, Umeå Universitet. Seminariet ges på engelska och har den engelska titeln "Retroactive Tagging: The Next Level of Retrieval Practice".

Abstract (på engelska)

Retroactive tagging, originally derived from the synaptic tag-and-capture hypothesis, describes how weakly encoded memories can later be stabilized into long-term memory if followed by a salient event that triggers neuromodulatory processes such as dopamine release and Long-Term Potentiation (LTP). Behavioral tagging extends this principle, where initial learning sets a “tag” that can be reinforced by novelty or emotionally significant events.

In educational contexts, pure biological novelty (e.g., an unexpected and emotional stimulus) is typically absent. Instead, educational approaches can partially replicate these effects through a combination of cognitive effort, motivation, and meaningful context. Retrieval practice can play a central role by reactivating earlier learning, linking it to new information, and generating salient retrieval cues and integrated networks of knowledge. The effectiveness of such “tags” depends on the challenge and perceived importance of the retrieval practice tasks, which potentially can engage similar neuromodulatory processes leading to knowledge integration across learning occasions.

Om föreläsaren (på engelska)

Bert Jonsson, Professor of Educational Measurements and Associate Professor of Psychology at Umeå University.  With an interdisciplinary approach, he combines educational science and neurocognitive research. Jonsson has investigated the effects of cognitive engagement on creative and mathematical problem-solving, the role of learning strategies in improving long-term learning and memory, and how math anxiety influences performance. A particular focus lies on the significance of individual differences. As an extension of his research findings and to bridge the gap between theory and practice, Jonsson collaborates with schools and teachers to implement evidence-based learning strategies in education.
