Högre seminariet i filosofi bjuder in till seminarium med Kalle Grill. Seminariet har den engelska titeln ”Paternalistic Voting".
In a well-functioning democracy, policies are enacted and implemented in accordance with the will of the people as expressed in elections and sometimes referendums. On a traditional understanding of the concept of paternalism, a policy is paternalistic if it is interfering, benevolent and against the will of those affected. In light of these two observations, it seems that voters may be engaged in paternalism when they vote for a policy, or for a wider political program, that will benevolently interfere with other people, against their will. This possibility may be investigated both conceptually and normatively. The outcomes of such an investigation are relevant for the debate on the ethics of voting - whether one should vote in accordance with one's self-interest or rather for the common good.
