The summer course provides a hands-on experience of a design & build project starting from the initial conceptual design work, translating design into detailed drawings and finally building the proposal at scale 1:1. The specificity of the given site will be investigated from different perspectives and the material and architectural aspects of the proposed structures will be evaluated depending on specific local conditions in terms of climate, building brief and sustainability. The course consists of two phases - the design phase (June) and Construction phase (August), the design phase takes place at Umeå School of Architecture. The construction phase will take place on site in the nearby region around Umeå, Västerbotten.
The course will be divided in two workshops and the selection will be made before the course starts!
1: Windshelters in the municipality of Robertsfors (cost free)
2: Holmön (students will need to pay for accommodation arranged by UMA and possible costs for travel)
The course is given full-time in weeks 23-24 and 32-34.
In addition to general entry requirements for university studies, applicants must also have completed at least 30 credits in the main field of architecture. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.
