About the course

  • Course information & Site selection by 10 May

The course is given full-time in weeks 23-24 and 32-34. Between weeks 25-31 the teachers are on holiday, during which time you can engage in self-study.

The summer course provides a hands-on experience of a design & build project starting from the initial conceptual design work, translating design into detailed drawings and finally building the proposal at scale 1:1. The specificity of the given site will be investigated from different perspectives and the material and architectural aspects of the proposed structures will be evaluated depending on specific local conditions in terms of climate, building brief and sustainability. The course consists of two phases - the design phase (June) and Construction phase (August), the design phase takes place at Umeå School of Architecture. The construction phase will take place on one of two sites in the nearby region around Umeå, Västerbotten; on Holmön and outside of Robertsfors.

    Site selection

The course will be divided into two sites, you will find a short presentation on the Canvas course page where you will also make your selection. Deadline to select site you would like to work with is 10 May at 16:00.

    1. Windshelter(s) in the municipality of Robertsfors (cost free)

    2. Windshelter and Sauna, Holmön (you will pay a subsidized fee for accommodation and possible costs for travel)

The course will be taught through input lectures, individual and group work to develop conceptual designs that are followed through with planning documentation drawings and construction drawings as part of the design & build process and finally constructed on site by the course participants.

At the end of the course, you will be assessed on an individual assignment reflecting on the process from concept to construction.
