Lectures on the initial phases of virus infection within cells

NEWS Professor Frank van Kuppeveld from Utrecht University payed a visit to the UCMR community 21-23 September to network and give a Distinguished Guests seminar hosted by UCMR PI Lars-Anders Carlson.

there is high level of synergy and complementarity between my research lines and the expertises at Umeå University

Although picornaviruses have been studied extensively, little is known about the processes that occur during the first several hours of infection because of a lack of sensitive assays. Professor Frank von Kuppeveld and the members of his lab have developed a single-molecule imaging assay, virus infection real-time imaging, to study translation and replication of individual picornaviruses in live cells. Theses experiments and the results was what he revealed in an interesting lecture that attracted about 50 life science researchers.

Three questions to Frank about his visit!

How was your stay and what was the highlight of your stay?

"I enjoyed my stay very very much! It was great talking and discussing with many good scientists, and also the lunch with the young PhD students and postdocs was a highlight. They impressed me very much through their high level of knowledge and motivation!"

What is your impression of life science research environment at Umeå University?

"I was very impressed by the large scale of the campus, the many students, the international character and atmosphere, and the many research areas that are covered at Umeå University.  The city itself seems to have a relaxed atmosphere."

Did you widen your research network?

"I have made new contacts as well as revived and intensified old ones, all of which will contribute to future research collaborations, as there is high level of synergy and complementarity between my research lines and the expertises at Umeå University."
