WASP at Umeå University

Umeå University is a partner university within WASP, Sweden's largest individual research program ever.

The Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment in autonomous systems and software development. The ambition is to advance Sweden into an internationally recognized and leading position in these areas.

Strong research areas in Umeå

Umeå University conducts strong research in the WASP central areas. Research groups focus areas such as control systems, industrial simulations, intelligent robotics, computer vision related to robotics and medical decision support. Machine learning methods are developed and applied in life science among other fields.

The university's fundamental research on other topics within the field of artificial intelligence is applied in e.g., contexts where the human needs to collaborate with the autonomous system, as in interactive decision support, personalised treatment interventions to improve health, service robotics, in vehicles or in the manufacturing industry. Social aspects need to be integrated in the autonomous and intelligent systems along with ethical aspects, which is another area in which Umeå University is conducting world-leading research.
