Internationalising Higher Education: Challenges and opportunities for Universities and academics in Sweden

Research project The purpose of this study is to examine how internationalisation policies are understood and interpreted by universities in Sweden.

The project is designed as an institutional and comparative research. We shall study single institutions (Stockholm and Umeå Universities) but also apply cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary (science and social science faculties) lenses. These comparisons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how internationalisation and its consequences are filtered and shaped in different types of university, and disciplinary cultures. The project time has been extended to 2023-12-31.

Project description

The project asks the following questions:

  • What are the key policies and strategies of internationalisation of higher education?
  • How are these interpreted and operationalized in different higher education institutions and faculties? How do academics experience mobility in different faculties and different universities, what are the main motivations they have to engage in the process?
  • What are the main benefits, and disadvantages in academic mobility and how can universities address these in order to achieve inclusive and productive mobility and internationalisation?
