About the course

The course will give you knowledge about geographical information systems, GIS, mainly with applications for environmental issues. The students will learn the main functions in ArcGIS, for example thematic maps, the use of vector and raster files and spatial analysis of different map layers. During the course, the student will get training in how to use different coordinate systems. Digital data from Swedish authorities is used as course material.

Required Knowledge

60 ETCS in earth science, or 60 ECTS in biology, chemistry or environmental science and 30 ECTS in earth science, Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A/5. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.


Academic credits Applicants in some programs at Umeå University have guaranteed admission to this course. The number of places for a single course may therefore be limited.
