Arts Campus

Umeå School of Architecture is part of the Umeå University Arts Campus, situated on the riverbank of Umeälven, between central Umeå and the main University Campus. At the Arts Campus you also find Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Bildmuseet - the University's museum for contemporary visual art, a branch of the University Library and the Science Centre/Maker Space Curiosum.

Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and Bildmuseet are each housed in separate buildings at the area although connected through the basement level. On this level you will find a branch of the University Library, UB Konstnärligt Campus, with literature and magazines focusing on art, design and architecture, as well as a lunch restaurant.

The area has grown in several stages since 1987, when Umeå Academy of Fine Arts first moved into a former industrial facility, soon followed by Umeå Institute of Design, established in 1989. In September 2010, the new building for Umeå School of Architecture was inaugurated. Two years later, in 2012, the new building for Bildmuseet was completed, whose activities thus moved from their previous premises in the Gammlia area where it had been situated since it started in 1982. Since the establishment of the Arts Campus, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts has also received a new building right next to the river. Its former premises now house the Umeå University's science center Curiosum (established in 2020). All the new buildings at Arts Campus are designed by the Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with White Arkitekter.
