Isabelle Nilsson
Scandinavian Spring
(Mixed media)
In her installation Scandinavian Spring, Isabelle Nilsson (b. 1999, Malmö) engages in the visual worlds of Romanticism and National Romanticism - nature, fairytales and ideas of home and belonging. Painting is surrounded by graphic and sculptural elements, and through decorative objects Nilsson approaches the ornamental culture of the 19th century, where emotions take on a physical form. She has used these historical movements as material to explore how its themes operate within her gaze. Romanticism is vulnerability and sacrifice, love is labor.
Isabelle Nilsson works with oil painting and drawing in collage-like compositions where different motifs meet and bear witness to one another. Through recurring symbols and forms a new narrative emerges beyond the source material.
