Doctoral studies

Are you interested in deepening your knowledge of a particular field of study? Are you interested in contributing to the production of new knowledge? If this is the case, then doctoral education at Umeå University is for you!

Doctoral education consists of four years of full-time study, which includes a number of courses and a thesis. Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will also cultivate your critical and analytical thinking. During your education you get to solve problems independently as you prepare for a professional career within academia, business or the public sector.

To be accepted as a doctoral student you are required:

• to fulfil the entrance qualifications for the subject in question.
• to show that you have other abilities that are necessary to complete the education.

Doctoral degree

A doctoral degree comprises 240 credits in a research subject, of which a course component is included and an approved scientific thesis of at least 120 credits.

Licentiate degree

The licentiate degree is the goal of the research training of 120 credits. The degree requires both approved postgraduate courses and an approved scientific thesis of at least 60 credits.
