This course gives an introduction to Swedish law. The first part presents the legislative process and the legal institutions including the EU legal system. It also introduces the different sources of law and the legal methods, thus giving a general idea of the Swedish legal system. The second part focuses on a few, central fields of law. This latter part aims at deepening the understanding of the first part, as well as presenting some central notions of the chosen fields of substantial law.
What will you learn? You will get a general overview of the Swedish legal system with emphasis on the sources of law and legal methods. A few areas of material law will be presented mainly as examples of the construction of both private and public law. The private law will be covered more extensively. Some comparisons will be done with the legal system of other countries.
Activities As the schedule will show, teaching is conducted through lectures and seminars. Attendance on seminars is mandatory! Much of the learning will be taking place working with the seminars, which requires you to take a great deal of responsibility in the learning process and that is not limited to the actual seminar itself. Thorough preparations are necessary in order to understand the discussions during the seminars. At the start of the course you will be divided into working groups of about 4-5 students. In these groups you will together before the seminars prepare the tasks which are to be dealt with later on.
Examination The grade of the course is entirely determined through a written exam at the end of the course. To the examination you are allowed to bring the course literature, the EC and EU Treaties and the translated Swedish Law, that will be will be distributed by the Department of Law (through Canvas).
