WELCOME TO THE COURSE

Master's Programme in Ecology

You have been admitted to the Master’s programme in Ecology. I am Johan Olofsson, programme coordinator. I am sure we will have two exciting years together. Umeå University offers a broad selection of courses in ecology and internationally competitive research in the field. I am convinced that our programme will give you opportunity to develop the professional skills needed and acquiring new exciting knowledge. You will meet me during the first course and can contact me with any questions

How to start

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

I want to activate my user account and install MFA

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    Help! It´s not working

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • 3. Course registration

Firstly, I wish to remind you if you have not already done so to reply to your Notification of Selection Results at universityadmissions.se, so that you won’t lose your place (seat) at the course/programme. If you have questions regarding your programme, you are most welcome to contact me (johan.olofsson@umu.se) or the study counselor (maria.karlsson01@umu.se). You will find our contact information at the end of this letter. We wish you a warm welcome to the programme and hope that you will enjoy your period of studies here in Umeå!

The programme starts off with introduction. If you are unable to attend during the registration and introduction, you need to contact the course/programme coordinator/study counselor in advance. You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system in order to be able to follow the course and to get your results registered during the course.
We have self-registration of our courses, and if you are registered on the programme courses you will automatically also be registered for the programme. The registration opens 1 week before the course starts. For instructions see the following link:

    Activate your Umu-id

  • 4. Course start

    Monday 31 August 2020

    Time: To be announced

    Location: To be announced

At the master programme in Ecology at Umeå University you can chose between three different courses as the first course:

Forest Ecology or Aquatic Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology and thereafter study Analysis of Field Data during the second half of the term.

You should thus register for either Forest Ecology or the two Aquatic courses and Analyses of Field Data.

If you have any questions about how to register, please contact johan.olofsson@umu.se, or maria.karlsson01@umu.se.

Since the registration only opens one week before the start of the programme, it is really great if you let me know whether you are planning to choose Forest Ecology or Aquatic Ecosystems, on email: johan.olofsson@umu.se.

Both courses start August 31 2020, and have a common introduction to the progamme. Details and halls are given in the course schedule for Forest Ecology and Aquatic Ecosystems.
