Master's Programme in IT Management

Welcome to the Master's Programme in IT Management, autumn term 2021! On this page you will find important information about how to register for the programme, links to welcome greeting and schedule for the first course, as well as contact information to the programme coordinator and our Student Support. How to start

  • 1. Your offer

    You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

    If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

    If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

    If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Register on the programme

    Online self-registration at the Student website
    When you have replied to your offer, you start off the programme by register for the first course.

    The first course of the programme is Management Information Systems (15 credits).

    You must register for that course, in order to be allowed to follow the programme and to get your results recorded.

    You self-register online at the Student website. Online registration is open between August 23  to September 1, 2021. If you do not register by  September 1 at the latest, you risk losing  your place (seat).

About the programme

  • Please confirm your acceptance

    You do not have to reply to the offer to attend the programme at University Admissions, but we at the Department of Informatics kindly request you to confirm your acceptance to as soon as possible - but no later than June 21, 2021.

    Also make sure to check all the required documents and materials outlined on the University Admission page (conditionals) and their deadlines, so that you know if you need to submit or bring academic documents before your arrival.

    If you decide not to attend the programme, please make sure to decline your offer. You can do this at Log in to your account, go to "Applications" and follow the instructions.

    It´s important to decline your offer as soon as you know that you will not be attending. This makes the place available for students on the waiting list.

    Hello, and welcome to the IT Management programme @ Umeå University. We hope that you are happy with your choice – because we are certainly happy to have you!

    My name is Ted Saarikko and I am the programme coordinator for the IT Management programme. I also help out with student counselling for graduate-level courses. If you have any questions regarding progression through the IT Management programme, elective courses, or getting your degree, please contact me at For instance, you can study IT Management as a 1-year or 2-year Master’s programme. If you’re not sure which is right for you, drop me a line and I’ll do my best to help you out. I am also an associate professor at the department of Informatics, so don’t be too surprised if you run into me during some of the courses.

    The first course, Management Information Systems, serves as an introduction to the themes covered in the programme. Please see the syllabus and/or welcome greeting for that course for more details. See below for an outline of upcoming terms. Please note that there is no course activity between December 23rd and January 2nd.

    Durations of terms

    Year 1:
    Autumn term starts on August 30, 2021 and ends on January 16, 2022.
    Spring term starts on January 17, 2022 and ends on June 5, 2021.

    Year 2:
    Autumn term starts on August 29, 2022 and ends on January 15, 2023.
    Spring term starts on January 16, 2023 and ends on June 4, 2023.

    As you know, the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted education as well as life in general over the past year.     As for your studies at Umeå university, the vice chancellor has mandated that first-year students should be given priority for campus-based activities. This means that most of your classes will be taught in classrooms on the university campus. The introduction to your first course will be held in room MA466 in the MIT-building (top floor).

New at Umeå University

  • Information due to COVID-19

    Thank you for choosing Umeå University! We really look forward to seeing you. Until October, most of the teaching at the university will take place online. But the library group study rooms and study spaces are open from the start of the semester. Please remember to keep your distance when using these spaces.

    The exact plan for the rest of the autumn semester has not yet been decided. At some point this autumn, we will likely all be able to meet on campus again, but the way back needs to be gradual. The university is planning on reaching a new decision about the autumn semester in mid-August. Unfortunately, we can’t give you any clear information about how your specific education will be affected quite yet. But stay updated through the Student web.

  • Checklist for admitted students

    Follow this simple list of things to complete your enrolment at Umeå University. It includes: how to secure housing, getting a residence permit (for citizens from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland), tuition payment (if applicable), travel directions and more.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular term, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but not later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme.

    If you will have housing through the International Housing Office you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the term (Autumn) or the same day as the term starts (Spring).

  • Activate your user account

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the term start in order to, for instance:

    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • register for courses
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the term start.

    If you are an exchange student, you will receive information on arrival about how to activate your account.

    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

    To get the card, you need to apply for it. Here’s how to apply for the UmU card.

  • Join a student union

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.

  • The website for current students

    The website for current students has all sorts of information about services, support, legal and practical matters at Umeå University. You can sign in to the learning platforms, see your schedule and course overview, register for a course, get a study certificate, apply for a degree or sign up for an examination.
